ISLAMABAD: Former president Dr. Arif Alvi Sunday said he did everything appropriate for the defence of the constitution.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi after stepping down from the presidency, Alvi asserted his commitment to accountability, democratic principles, and the party’s anti-corruption stance.

Alvi emphasized that he remained steadfast on upholding the principles of his party concerning corruption.

He expressed concern over the economic downturn over the past two to three years and the country facing instability.

He called for respecting the public mandate and stated that his efforts focused on ending divisions and uniting the nation.

Alvi mentioned that he was under oath to not disclose any secrets without the prime minister’s permission, as the prime minister had taken oath to reveal them if it benefitted the public.

He said majority decisions of court did not speak about Article 6 and if they wanted to try him under it, they should do it. Alvi spoke about the importance of connecting the political figures and the establishment to stabilize the country for progress.

He proposed resolving the issue of reserved seats first and then convening the assembly session.

Responding to a question, he advised questioning about the theft of mandate in localities, Alvi highlighted that placing the IMF director in Pakistan was crucial for economic improvement.

He revealed his decision to prevent the assembly dissolution, emphasizing his readiness to meet Imran Khan based on his lawyers’ advice. Alvi praised Imran Khan as an honest and trustworthy leader who united the nation, stating that there was no leader like him in the world.
