Hosting grand wedding functions has become a status symbol for us. The majority of people want to keep the wedding functions of their children a simple affair, but they cannot stand up to the pressures of society. Thankfully, the Punjab Marriage Functions Act 2016 comes as a saviour for them.
It bans all those things that should never have been part of a wedding function – too many dishes, late hours of wedding ceremonies, illumination and decorations on the streets and adjoining areas or of wedding halls, the use and display of firecrackers, explosives or firearms, public display of dowry etc. The law comes prescribes punishment of one month incarceration along with a fine ranging from Rs50,000 to over two million.
