Responsible agriculture

Sindh caretaker Chief Minister retired Justice Maqbool Baqar reportedly expressed concerns about what he called a “covert” plan of the Indus River System Authority for the extension of irrigated agriculture to Cholistan. These concerns highlight the need for transparent and inclusive decision-making processes that prioritize the interests of all provinces involved. Furthermore, the hazards associated with irrigated agriculture, such as water depletion, soil degradation, and ecosystem disruption, pose significant risks to Cholistan's delicate ecology. The region's unique biodiversity and ecological balance must be preserved to maintain its resilience in the face of climate change and environmental degradation. Cholistan is not just a canvas for agricultural development; it is a treasure trove of cultural and historical heritage.

Responsible agriculture

With several historical forts and a thriving livestock population, including camels, Cholistan's heritage is deeply intertwined with its natural landscape. Preserving this heritage is essential to maintaining the region's identity and promoting sustainable tourism. Given these concerns, it is crucial that agricultural strategies for Cholistan prioritize both environmental conservation and heritage preservation. Only smart agricultural practices should be encouraged, leveraging the region's underground water resources, particularly those beneath the historic Hakra River bed.
