Case registered against PPP candidates for attacking polling station in Maymar

The Rangers have registered a case against 35 suspects, including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders Hafiz Abdul Barr and Ali Ahmed, for attacking Rangers personnel, creating chaos and threatening lives on the elections day.

An FIR No 80/24 under the sections 147, 148, 149, 353, 186, 427, 337A(i), 188 and 189 of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with the Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act on the complaint of Rangers Inspector Tanvir Ahmed at the Gulshan-e-Maymar police station.

The FIR stated that the Rangers were on duty on the elections day at the polling station of the Darul Arqam School in Gulshan-e-Maymar, District West, when the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate for NA-244 Hafiz Abdul Barr and candidate PS-116 Ali Ahmed arrived to cast their votes, accompanied by armed guards.

After voting, they left but returned inside again, causing disruption and halting the polling process, reads the FIR. It adds that upon receiving information, the Rangers further reinforced the polling station but Barr and Ahmed came back for the third time and asked a constable to open the door.

The Rangers sepoy allowed them inside but refused entry to the guards. However, accompanied by 30 to 35 individuals, they forcibly entered the polling station, assaulted the Rangers, attempted to snatch weapons, and spread terror.

Armed guards loaded their guns and threatened to shoot anyone who tried to stop them, the FIR stated, added that both candidates and others roughed up the polling staff, tore up voter lists, and finally, the Rangers managed to free the polling staff from their grip. Weapons were confiscated from their guards and mobile phones were returned. All the suspects then fled the scene, reads the FIR.
