Project launched to build community resilience against natural hazards
Islamabad: As part of its efforts to build people’s resilience against natural hazards, the Community Resilience Activity–North (CRA-N) has embarked on an infrastructure rehabilitation project in northwest Pakistan with the collaboration of the local administration.
Under the initiative, the Ucharo irrigation channel will be rehabilitated to enhance water distribution, improve agricultural productivity, and fortify the community against potential natural disasters, according to the representatives of CRA-N. They said the rehabilitation of the head wall, apron, and flood protection wall was also planned.
The CRA-N members insisted that the project would help develop the resilience of Ucharo and Kuza Kanaki communities in Doghalgo village of Swat district’s Matta tehsil. They said the CRA-N, in order to support the creation of disaster-proof local communities, organised training workshops about ways to ensure people’s safety before and during natural calamities. These sessions enable the residents to play an active role in identifying and responding to risks associated with potential floods, earthquakes, and climate change, according to them.
They said the impact of the initiative extended beyond infrastructure rehabilitation as it embodied a collective commitment to community development, sustainable agriculture, and resilience-building. The CRA-N organised a “community consensus meeting setting the stage for transformation” of Ucharo and Kuza Kanaki communities.
A diverse group of 60 people, including 30 men and women each, participated in the meeting along with government officials, community elders, religious leaders, and community members, including and youth. The CRA-N team informed participants about the programme's objectives, goals, background, and the purpose of the meeting. It also gave a comprehensive overview of the initiatives, implementation procedures, and the essential role of the project oversight committee in monitoring project activities.
Dr Mohammad Zafar of the health department, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said the rehabilitation promised significant improvement in livelihoods in the area. He urged participants to apply the knowledge gained during the training sessions to effectively “navigate and overcome potential future disasters.” Principal of Government Middle School, Beha, Niaz Muhammad appreciated the infrastructure rehab programme and said it would have a positive impact on the community's agricultural income. Taj Muhammad Khan, a community member and representative of the project oversight committee, emphasised the importance of workshops and training activities for increasing public awareness.
