ISLAMABAD: The capital is heading towards a water crisis as the water levels in the Simly Dam and Khanpur Dam have further decreased due to scanty rainfall.

According to CDA sources, the water supply from Simly Dam to Islamabad has reduced to 22 million gallons per day from 32 million gallons per day. The highest level at Simly Dam is 2,315 ft, the current level is 2,288 ft and the lowest level is 233 ft. At present, there is only 57 percent of the available water storage, which can fulfill the need of only 142 days.

However, the situation is more alarming at Khanpur Dam. At present, the water level is 1,943 ft as against the highest level of 1,982 ft. The water storage is only 30 percent, which can meet the demand for only 106 days. Islamabad is receiving 7 million gallons water per day from Khanpur Dam as against the previous supply of 10 million gallons water per day. The capital is also receiving 2 million gallons water per day from the Rawal Dam.

The CDA had requested the Punjab Irrigation Department to supply an additional 2 million gallons water per day from the Rawal Dam, which was accepted by the irrigation department. Following this, the CDA forwarded an MoU draft but it is yet to be signed.

Islamabad is also receiving 30 million gallons water per day from the tubewells. In total, the residents of the capital are getting 62 million gallons water daily, which is 15 million less than the normal water supply. The water is being supplied to F and G series on alternate days. The department of water supply is also facing financial issues as 10 water tankers as well as motors are out of order, four new tube wells are yet to be installed and some lines need repair work. The work is pending due to lack of funds.
