ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) Tuesday sought submission of the summary sent to the prime minister for promotions of CSP officers.
The direction was issued in a case in which the government had filed an appeal against a decision of the high court regarding limits of the authority of the prime minister in promotion of CSP officers.
The SC bench headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk adjourned the case till January 30. The attorney general held that there were strong reasons for the prime minister to send cases of some officers back to the selection board. He said the prime minister is not a rubber stamp.
The chief justice said there were two basic questions in this case as to which the limits of the power of the prime minister were and how these powers deemed to be utilised. The attorney general said the prime minister could reject or accept a summary and the SC decisions endorsing this argument were available. Justice Gulzar questioned where that summary was that was sent to the prime minister by the selection board. The AG replied it was not with him upon which the CJ directed that the summary be presented to the court on Wednesday (today). Defence counsel Asma Jehangir told the SC that high courts had issued decisions on the basis of that summary and sought some time. Upon her request, the SC adjourned the hearing till January 30.
