Power theft or ‘kunda’ culture has ruined the power sector in the country. This is not to deny rampant corruption in Discos and Gencos of which power theft is a necessary product. In Karachi, the ratio of power theft is very high owing to political reasons and high population density. This practice has caused major inconvenience to genuine electricity users. There is a need to start a campaign against the misuse of electricity. But this offers a temporary solution.
We need to find a permanent solution to this problem. In this connection, K-Electric’s decision to lay aerial bundled cables to prevent illegal connections is a step in the right direction. KE has reportedly installed these cables in Lines Area and Saddar to check power theft. Hopefully, this step will help reduce line losses and cable fault.
