The Indus dolphin

By our correspondents
May 17, 2016

The Indus River dolphin, also referred to as the ‘blind dolphin’, is one of the world’s rarest mammals and the second most endangered freshwater dolphin. Some 1,100 specimens of this species exist today in the lower reaches of the Indus. Reckless fishing and the construction of dams and canals on the river are two of the biggest threats to its survival, in addition to pollution.

The WWF Pakistan has been involved in rescue missions, and coordinating with local communities to conserve this species. It is ensuring that habitat degradation, stranding and fisheries by catch do not threaten this freshwater species. The government should also help conserve the Indus dolphin and other endangered species in the country.
