MOGADISHU: At least eight civilians were killed during France's botched attempt to free a hostage in Somalia, witnesses said Sunday.

Four were killed outside Bulomarer, the town where the failed raid took place on Saturday, and four were caught in crossfire during a pitched battle between French commandos and Islamist fighters, the witnesses said by telephone.
