KARACHI: A third-degree fire, that erupted at a garments factory killed at least 21 people and injured near three dozens here on Tuesday, Geo News reported.
According to rescue sources a large number of workers are still trapped in the burning factory located on Hub River Road.
The number of the injured, according to Provincial Minister for Health Dr Sagheer, was around 31.
Women and children are also the dead and injured.
All the firefighting force of the metropolis has been called in to fight out the blaze, which engulfed the factory located in Karachi West.
Snorkels were being used to bring the people down from the roof of the factory, which has now become a ball of fire.
Eyewitnesses said one of the worker trapped in the two-storey factory jumped down to save his life.
At least 20 fire tenders were busy dousing flames at the factory. The fire department was facing difficulty refilling the engine’s water tanks as three hydrants in Baldia Town were closed.
According to sources, around 2000 people are employed at the 2000 square-yard garment factory.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.
The Provincial Minister for Industries and Commerce, Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, has tasked the concerned authorities to come up with a report on the incident within 24 hours.
