Gilani should resign immediately: Nawaz

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani should step down from his position after being convicted by the Supreme Court (SC), Geo News reported.

While talking to Geo News’ senior anchor Kamran Khan, Nawaz Sharif said that the prime minister should resign from his office and pave way for a new elected prime minister.

"In light of the verdict, I think PM Gilani should resign immediately rather than prolong the issue," he said.

Nawaz said the government did not spare any chance to ridicule court and its orders. Whenever responsible and dedicated officers were appointed to investigate issues, they were replaced by the people of their own choice.

He said the coalition partners also played their role in increasing political chaos in the country which cannot be accepted.

The PML-N leader suggested the government to hold elections immediately and appoint a neutral prime minister who would write the letter to Swiss authorities.

“If the government is willing, the PMLN would support a caretaker setup for the federal and provincial governments.”

While commenting on SC’s stance he said, "I fully believe the Supreme Court has the high moral ground while the government is standing on the wrong wicket," Nawaz said.

The SC has ruled that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is guilty of contempt for refusing to obey an order to write to the authorities in Switzerland to ask them to re-open corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

AAB PACHTAWAT KA HOWAY JAB CHIRYAN CHUG’GAEEN KHAIT. Nawaz had signed CoD with BB Shaheed, in hope of becoming 3rd time Prime Minister of Pakistan & corruption cases of both will not to be probed, but Zardari, a very shrewd Politician, after BB’s death, declared CoD ‘null & void’, but kept Nawaz in good hope & got benefit of ‘Friendly Opposition’ in Assembly. Nawaz due to his wrong Policies is loosing his popularity, got defeated by PPP candidate in by-election, PP-194, Multan-1.

Mr. CJ why cases against Sharif brothers are not re-opened? I think that Nawaz Sharif has lost his memory that why he had attacked on SC during his government.

Gillani is a convict who has served his sentence too, by default he came under 63 1 g and became ineligible at the time of "Court Rising". Atizaz should have appealed to safeguard the PM from disqualification during the 30 seconds of sentencing but he did so the PM is disqualified in all cases, even if they file an appeal, they will file for a disqualified PM who cannot be called PM and by default his entire cabinet is dismissed too.

This must be the one unique country in the world where both the serving President and the PM are convicted criminals! To Einstein's relativity law, can I add this as our nation's law of relativity, which is at least proposed by a fellow Muslim and not an infidel: a = mc2. Where relativity is self explanatory, a stands for acquittal, m for many, c is speed of light. Voila - with connections, release equals many times the speed of light!

RESIGN? No never - has any one ever resigned in Pakistan? not to my knowledge. Mian saheb also enjoying even without being the chief minister or member of the national assembly - so why should he ask his team to resign. Only the down trodden people of Pakistan should resign to their fate!

Nawaz wants Ex-PM to bow out without causing anarchy and to cooperate in the formation of a neutral caretaker government so fresh elections may be held. Nawaz has also made it known that such a PM should write the letter to Swiss authorities to start a process for return of stolen wealth to the Pakistani taxpayer. Nawaz should keep his options open in the event Gilani shows defiance of Court order which is a likely outcome. Pakistani people should braise themselves for a stormy few days.
