The special task force of the Karachi Traffic Police issued challans to 634 vehicles over violations of various traffic rules on the first day of its deployment on Monday.
According to a traffic police spokesman, violations of traffic rules on Sharea Faisal have fallen, so has the number of challans from 4,000 to 634 challans since the authorities decided recently to make the busy artery a model one.
At least 454 motorcyclists were fined for riding their two-wheelers without safety helmets, 30 vehicles were fined for violating the one-way rule, four over ignoring the lane discipline, four public transport vehicles for carrying passengers on rooftops and another 142 for breaking other rules.
Talking to the PPI, the spokesman said that after making the decision of setting up a new special task force comprising 132 personnel a week ago for easing traffic congestion on Sharea Faisal, the traffic police’s plan was going on in the right direction.
The traffic police also banned all rickshaws and heavy vehicles, including water tankers, from using the road, but later the rickshaws were exempted from the ban.
The task force has special vehicles, 44 motorcycles and eight lifters.
