PESHAWAR: The Dispute Resolution Councils (DRCs) have become operational again after the vacation of stay by the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
The DRCs have successfully settled 413 petty disputes during the last month throughout the province and referred 30 cases to other relevant forums for legal action, said a handout issued by the Police Department.
Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani had established DRCs in Peshawar last year to bring about positive change in ‘’Thana culture’’ and ensure prompt settlement of petty disputes amongst the general public.
Owing to its resounding success and the ever increasing trust of the public in this system of dispute resolution, a strong need was felt for replicating it in other areas of the province.
Later such councils were established all over the province and a large number of people were approaching them for resolution of petty disputes. Three months ago, the PHC stopped the DRCs from functioning. But after the vacation of the stay order of court, necessary amendments were brought in the law and it became operational again. The councils are responsible for amicable resolution of disputes, fact-finding enquiries and acting as jury in the conduct of contested investigation.
