CHARSADDA: The government has yet to complete work on the 740 megawatts Munda Dam project despite the prevailing power crisis in the country.
The construction work started on the project in 2002, which was to be completed in two phases. It is being constructed on Swat River about five kilometres upstream of Munda Headwork. The objective of the dam was to generate 740 megawatt power, ensure flood control and irrigate 15,100 acres of land.
A few days back a Senate meeting was informed that the country would not have suffered losses in the 2010 floods, had the dam been constructed. The dam would have been completed in 2007.
Experts say the Munda Dam is in the country’s interest and would avert the possibility of flood damage. The construction of the dam would not only help add more electricity to the national grid but also would create direct and indirect job opportunities in Mohmand Agency and Charsadda district, believed the experts.
