The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has made mechanical sweeper operational, it had purchased 26 y ears ago, to carry out cleanliness work on major roads of the federal capital.
The mechanical sweeper was imported from Czech Republic in 1988 at cost of Rs12.5 million but it was dumped since then giving reasons that it was not suitable for the purpose for which it was purchased. “We have spent less than Rs1 million to make it operational with the help of a local mechanic and now it will be used on Constitution Avenue, Margalla Road and other major roads,” an official of CDA said. The official, however, said the mechanical sweeper does not work in muddy conditions and it is more suitable in dry weather. A meeting presided over by the CDA Chairman Maroof Afzal on Tuesday decided to introduce mechanical sweeping of major avenues and door-to-door mechanical collection of household waste in different residential sectors of the federal capital.
It was also decided that it would be mandatory on upcoming new contractors for sanitation to have their mechanical sweepers besides possessing other required machinery and vehicles not older than 10 years.
