A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday suspended death warrants of a death row convict on basis of compromise.
Niaz Ahmed was scheduled to be hanged on Tuesday. The bench headed by Justice Mahmood Maqbool Bajwa suspended the death warrants on application of brother of the convict. His counsel informed the court that a court in Mandi Bahauddin had awarded death sentence to Niaz in murder of one Mazhar Iqbal. He said the Supreme Court had dismissed his appeal and Punjab Home Department issued his death warrants for October 13.
Submitting documentary proofs before the court, his counsel said legal heirs of the deceased had forgiven him after reaching a compromise. He said they also had submitted the compromise before the trial court but the court was not acknowledging it. The court suspending the death warrants till further orders, directed the counsel to submit certified copies of the compromise before the court within two weeks.
