A special squad of Punjab Food Authority (PFA) under the supervision of Director Operation Ayesha Mumtaz raided Lahore Railway Station and seized over 40-kg pig meat which was being supplied to the provincial capital and other parts of the province. The PFA squad on a tip-off raided the railway station and caught a man unloading the meat packed in two drums and four bags from a train. The squad told the media that the arrested man had been distributing meat to the city hotels since long. It is being supplied to Lahore from Rawalpindi and sent to restaurants and local hotels, said a PFA in charge.
However, the arrested accused told the media that the meat was sent from Rawalpindi by Ashfaq Shah and he was taking the meat to a leather factory where it was used to produce some leather chemical.
On the other hand, Food Authority Director Ayesha Mumtaz claimed the accused was a member of a gang involved in supplying pork meat to different restaurants, hotels and food points. However, she said she will be able to say something after the completion of inquiry and lab tests of the meat and samples of the meat have been sent to laboratory for DNA tests. The divisional medical officer of Railway while denying the PFA claim told the media that no illegal meat smuggling had been done via Lahore Railway and Railway cargo service never allowed such practice.
