Nine IJT activists arrested over scuffle with students

Government College of Science, Wahdat Road turned into a battle field when the activists of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) scuffled with the students of BS Hons (Journalism) over the issue of co-education and subjected them to torture on Wednesday.
Three students were injured. Police reached the scene and arrested over 50 students and sent nine nominated students behind bars after registering an FIR against them and released the other detained students. Over 35 unknown students have also been accused in the FIR.
The IJT activists had also scuffled with the students of journalism over co-education a couple of days back. On the day of incident, they started quarrelling again over the same issue and subjected a number of students including females to torture. The accused were equipped with clubs.
Following the incident and arrest of students, the victim students gathered on Wahdat Road and blocked the road to register their protest.
Long queues of vehicles were witnessed on Wahdat Road. Students and their parents were stuck on the road for hours.
Senior officers of police reached the scene to negotiate with students and pacify them. The injured students were shifted to hospital. Police raided the hostel and arrested IJT activists. The hostel was sealed. Police registered a case against Osama, Ali Hassan, Imtiaz Bhatti, Majid Bhatti, Abdul Ghafoor and Rizwan and were conducting raids to arrest other accused.
When contacted, the college Principal Prof Muhammad Zahid Butt said he had been persuading students associated with IJT to be more open because they were also students of the college, but they did not follow his instructions and the incident happened. He said it was highly condemnable that students belonging to IJT misbehaved with female students. Prof Zahid Butt said the college was following the government’s policy. He said in the wake of Wednesday’s incident four students associated with Jamiat were also rusticated while the hostel was sealed after operation by the police.
BODY FOUND: A 50-year-old man was found dead in Mozang police limits. Police removed the body to morgue for autopsy. The victim later identified as Abdul Sattar was lying dead on a roadside. Police after being informed reached the scene and rushed him to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Police said the victim was apparently a drug addict.
