Following the tragic attack on a bus carrying members of the Ismaili community, the Sindh government announced to observe a day of mourning on Thursday (today) while the national flag on all official buildings were directed to be flown at half-mast; special prayers for the victims and survivors would also be held.
Quick to suspend an area station house officer and a deputy superintendent police during his visit to the site, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah notified media officials regarding formation of an inquiry team comprising senior police officials who would probe into the incident.
Expressing sympathies to the Ismaili community, he said “The community’s contribution towards the progress and prosperity of the country cannot be undermined.”
Accepting responsibility for providing protection to the people, he said the Karachi operation was a part of the series of measures taken to stabilise the law and order situation in the city.
“The entire nation knows that substantial achievements against terrorists, target killers and kidnappers have been achieved by the Sindh Police and Rangers during the National Action Plan,” he claimed.
While responding to a question regarding the government’s failure to curb terrorist attacks, he said the menace was not particular to the Sindh province or to Pakistan. “The war on terror has affected countries globally; Iraq and Afghanistan being the two out of many.”
He added that success only lay in strengthening the governance system and appealed for the masses to cooperate with the government in this regard.
The Sindh Inspector General Police was directed to lodge an FIR and identify the attackers through the footages of the attack. A compensation of Rs500,000 was also announced for the heirs of the deceased while Rs200,000 and free medical treatment for the injured.
