LAHORE: Police have arrested two prime accused involved in the lynching of two people in Youhanabad after being identified with the help of video footage.
A mob had killed and burnt two men after the twin bombings at churches in Youhanabad some days ago. The victims were later identified as Hafiz Naeem - a glass cutter - and Babar Nauman, a factory worker.
Police identified the accused through video footage and arrested Yousaf Johnson from Sialkot and Sohail Johnson from Gujranwala.Pastor Irshad told The News that the police had arrested more than 108 people from Youhanabad, Township, Asif Town and other parts of the metropolitan. He described the police action as unfair, saying all the detained people were not involved in illegal activities.
Hundreds of people had protested after the suicide attacks and the police were charging everyone seen in the footage of violence without considering whether they were involved or not, he added.
The police are conducting raids to arrest other accused as well and, reportedly, Aslam Pervez Sahutra - the chairman of Human Liberation Commission - has also been arrested. A police officer said Johnson had burnt the two alive on the instructions of Sahutra; however, they would establish the fact by using modern techniques.
On Wednesday, CCPO Lahore Amin Wains reprimanded the officers of operations and investigation wings over delayed response during the Youhanabad incident. He said lame excuses would not work and a new action plan was to be followed in future.
According to the plan, three squads of reserve police, teargas shells and other necessary equipment will be provided to every SP at his office.
