The UN General Assembly has declared November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The premise of this day is to raise public awareness of violence faced by women. Women’s rights activists have chosen this date to commemorate the death anniversary of three sisters who were killed by a Dominican dictator in 1960 for political protests.
Unfortunately, a large number of Pakistani women are also victims of gender-based violence. Women are often confronted with situations where their constitutional and religious rights are violated through crimes such as abduction, rape, torture, sexual assault, honour killing, genital mutation and forced marriage. The government should take measures to formulate policies designed to protect and empower women in our society.
