This refers to the article, ‘Russia enters the war’ (October 6) by Patrick Cockburn. Syria is now the eye of the storm as far as the emerging global power configuration is concerned. The recent speeches by Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin, when read in conjunction with Benjamin Netanyahu’s address at the UN, enable us to collate the threats these nations pose to each other. The seeds of destruction are being sown by those who are jostling for global supremacy. Obama and Netanyahu have been unambiguous in articulating their ambitions to wreak havoc with the peace of the world. Only Putin stood up to countenance the naked threats dished out by Obama.
Putin confronted the American hegemonic designs cloaked in the lofty attire of democracy, equality and peace, and laid the blame at the doorstep of the Americans for creating a mess everywhere in the world. By carrying out targeted strikes in Syria, Russia has imparted a lesson about the use and abuse of power which perhaps the Americans had started to forget of late. The Kunduz hospital catastrophe is fresh enough.
