A vast area – including Chak Shahpur, Chak Sohrani and Chak Pityat – in the Rajanpur district has been completely destroyed by floods. People have been facing floods for decades. Mostly farmers live in the area and damage to their crops means everything is lost.
Now people want permanent solutions to their problems rather than receiving aid under the rehabilitation programme that offers a nominal amount of Rs25,000 to each affected family. One permanent solution is to build water reservoirs on seasonal streams that feed on rainwater coming from Koh-e-Suleman or construct a barrage on uncultivated area (approximately 30-40 km wide) which is right under Koh-e-Suleman. A barrage will not only provide a permanent solution to the flood problem of this area, it will also benefit the whole district.
