According to media reports, the Asian Development Bank has asked the government to cut subsidies on electricity. This is typical malevolent advice aimed at punishing the people of this country. Electricity is an essential commodity and no nation can survive without it in today’s world.
Governments all over the world have made sure that electricity is produced cheaply and made available to their people at an affordable price. But in our case electricity rates are increasing constantly and no arrangements have been made to produce it from cheap sources of energy. This has been a constant routine with all governments – past or present. The government should therefore stick to power subsidies. Every government that comes into power promises abundant cheap electricity but nothing has happened during the last 10 years. Electricity rates continue to rise and loadshedding is also escalating along with it. Donor agencies never forced our governments to produce electricity from cheap sources of energy. There is simply no light visible at the end of the tunnel.
