The Chinese firm, building the Karote (Kotli) Hydropower Project, has reportedly applied to Nepra for power tariff of over Rs10/kWh. The tariff appears to be very high when compared to the electricity produced by Mangla/Tarbela dams which is not above Rs2/kWh.
If it the tariff rate is confirmed then people, already overburdened by the ever-increasing power tariffs, should forget about cheap hydroelectricity in the future. Nepra needs to clarify the report. Incidentally, Karote on the Jhelum River falls in the jurisdiction of AJK and not in Punjab. The AJK government needs to take up this point in the interests of the people of Azad Kashmir.
