The phenomenal rise of IS has taken the west by surprise. There are many questions such as: how does IS survive? Why are young and educated westerners joining the group? These questions can be easily answered by Pakistanis who have witnessed similar insurgent groups in the past.
In Pakistan, each man joining a terrorist group was paid a handsome monthly salary and given food, clothing and arms. Once it became obvious that these insurgents were financed and controlled by foreign organisations, the Pakistani authorities traced and blocked every means of their survival – money, food, weapons and fuel – by tracing and arresting all those who were supplying these items to them on cash payment. With no money, food or ammo, these insurgent groups soon started losing fighters or were tackled by the Pakistani Army. The west should do the same with IS.
