Justice (r) Rana Bhagwandas is an honourable name in the judiciary. This achievement is spectacular in this land of the pure where Hindus constitute just 1.6 percent of the total population according to the 1991 census – down from 17 percent in 1948.
Bhagwandas was a very good and stable judge. Incidentally, apart from law degrees, Bhagwandas also did his masters in Islamic Studies. For the western media, Justice Bhagwandas had been an exciting find in the land infamous for producing extremists. When asked how he felt being the first non-Muslim chief justice of Pakistan, Bhagwandas replies: “For me, it makes no difference because I treat it as a sacred trust. It is the virtue of God to do justice and we as judges act as His agent. I always take guidance from the Creator so that I may not give a wrong judgment.”
