Pakistan’s concerns over the Indo-US nuclear deal and Barack Obama’s support for India’s candidature for the UNSC are quite genuine. If we look into the history of the US and India regarding UNSC resolutions, it is evident that the record of both the countries is not good.
The US always flouted UN resolutions in case of clash with its own interests. In 2003, the US attacked Iraq, violating UN resolutions. In a way the US’ support to India is a reward for not abiding by the UN over the Kashmir issue. Against this backdrop, it is good that Pakistan is enhancing its ties with China and Russia. China and Russia are both permanent members of the Security Council. In this way, Pakistan can counter the destabilising factor in the balance of power equation in South Asia. Besides dealing with the challenges diplomatically, Pakistan needs to strengthen its economy which is the most important element in determining the status of a nation in the international community.
