The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Tuesday dissolved its lawyers’ forum and in its place formed a United Legal Council that will be headed by Barrister Farogh Naseem.

The decision to dissolve the lawyers’ forum was taken on Tuesday after a meeting of the coordination committee chaired by acting convener Nadeem Nusrat.

The United Legal Council was set up on the occasion to spread the party’s philosophy in the legal fraternity and take part in bar council elections. The new council will also co-ordinate with international bar councils and organise seminars, conferences and symposiums.

Barrister Dr Farogh Nasim was selected as the president of the council while the Gulfaraz Khan Khattak was appointed as the secretary. Other members include Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Dr Khalid Maqbool, Kunwar Naveed Jamil, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Rauf Siddiqui and Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan, who will serve as advisers to the newly-created council.

Meanwhile, the MQM’s coordination committee also condemned the bomb blast in Karkhano Market, Peshawar, and said terrorists were raising their heads once again in Pakistan amid the new wave of extremism sweeping across the world.

The coordination committee said terrorists wanted to undermine the positive steps being taken by Pakistani authorities for bringing peace in the region.

“Terrorists are resorting to these dastardly acts in order to make their presence felt. The blast in Peshawar is also an attempt to harm the ongoing war against terrorism but the nation is determined to root out extremism and will stand with its armed forces,” read part of the statement issued on the occasion.
