NAB, FIA told to file comments over inquiries against Sharjeel Memon
Karachi
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday directed deputy prosecutor general of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and federal law officer to apprise the court of whether there were any inquiries or cases pending against former information minister of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Sharjeel Inam Memon.
The direction came on a petition filed by Memon against initiation of corruption inquiries against him.
The PPP leader - who was said to be living in self-exile in London after law enforcement agencies’ initiated a crackdown against politicians and bureaucrats involved in corruption - submitted through his attorney, Mazhar Hussain Pitafi, that he came to know of the inquiries against him through the media.
The petitioner’s counsel submitted that neither the petitioner was involved in corrupt practices nor had he ever misused his power while serving as minister of the provincial government.
He submitted that attempts were being made to implicate him in fake inquires for offences he had not committed and sought protection against any coercive action.
He requested the court to restrain the NAB from arresting him in connection with any of the inquiries.
The counsel of NAB and federal government sought time from the court to inform it of pending inquiries against the petitioner.
SHC’s division bench headed by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar directed the law officer to submit their replies and adjourned the hearing till January 14.
