Rawalpindi : Civil Judge (Rawalpindi) Umar Hasan Khan on Thursday awarded 1-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs30,000 on a purse snatcher. The video of the incident went viral on social media that led to early arrest of the young purse snatcher and speedy disposal of the case in seven days.
“If the accused is unable to pay the fine, he will have to face 2 months imprisonment as well,” the judge said in his ruling. The accused confessed his crime in court. He recorded his statement in court according to Section 164 and confessed his crime.
The Race Course Police arrested the Anis Iqbal who fled from the scene after snatching a purse from a woman in Rawalpindi’s Dhok Chaudhrian area. In the video, the suspect, who was on a motorcycle, had snatched a purse from a burqa-clad woman passing through a street in Rawalpindi’s Dhok Chaudhrian. The Rawalpindi police said that when they tried to arrest Anis Iqbal, the suspect, fired upon the law enforcement officers. They added that the pistol of the suspect instead backfired and the bullet hit his right wrist.
The police said that they have also recovered the stolen money and purse from the suspect, adding that Iqbal has had a criminal record as well.
