Right to shelter
June 30, 2021
Last year, the heavy rains brought Karachi to a standstill. The authorities lamented that the encroachment on, and along, the major storm drains (nullahs) was the main reason for the flooding. Later, the Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered to demolish all those buildings that were constructed on and around nullahs.
The authorities started its anti-encroachment drive and demolished houses that were built near Gujjar Nala. This operation, however, left thousands of families homeless. The Sindh government shouldn’t leave people on their own. How are they supposed to find shelter? These people should be given either monetary compensation or houses.
