Local hopes
The MQM is poised to clinch the coveted post of Karachi mayorship after winning 134 union councils out of 209 in the local bodies elections. The election results have proved that despite facing a difficult political situation the MQM’s organisational setup and vote bank remained intact.
After establishing its credentials as the biggest party in the city, there is a dire need to purge it of criminal elements – a need that is there for all other political parties in Karachi as well. There is a need to come clear on other outstanding issues in order to provide and ensure good governance to people as well as effective law and order. The people of Karachi look forward to the day when problems like water shortage, loadshedding, waste management, etc, are solved. The MQM needs to work in conjunction with the provincial government to stop land-grabbing, extortion and mobile phone snatching, and work towards improving the living conditions for the people of Karachi.
