Debt forgiveness

This refers to the letter, ‘Odious debt’ (November 14) by Amjad Javed. The total debt owed by every citizen has increased by 20 percent according to the writer. Donor countries especially in the West, would never agree to debt forgiveness (or relief) since loans are the most efficient tool to keep the developing and poor countries under their thumb. It is also profitable for them as these loans carry heavy interest. Their objective is limited to their own selfish motives.
I agree with the writer that any liability accepted or contract signed under duress or pressure, is null and void. Unfortunately, these debts have been thrust upon us, in connivance with our so-called leaders. Thanks to their foolishness, selfishness, high-level white collar corruption, combined with lack of political insight, the whole nation has suffered. The only practical solution is to live within our own means. Our rulers should refrain from living royal and lavish lifestyles at the expense of the common man.
