JI, PTI present joint manifesto for women

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its ally in Karachi for the upcoming local government election, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), on Monday unveiled their joint manifesto for women and their issues on Monday.
The manifesto was issued at a joint press conference held by JI’s Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman with one of PTI’s mayoral candidate, Firdous Shamim Naqvi.
In his opening remarks, Hafiz Naeem thanked the people for awarding a warm welcome to PTI chief Imran Khan and JI chief Siraj-ul-Haq who had arrived in the city to lead a joint rally.
Naqvi while presenting the salient features of the JI-PTI manifesto for women — with a slogan of “Empowered women, prosperous society” — said the parties intended to have 25 percent job quota for women in all public and private institutions.
He said under the manifesto, the parties if elected to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), will establish day care centres for working women. “We will set up women’s employment centre for placement and career guidance,” said Shamim. “Moreover, the quota for women in Sindh Police will also be increased to 30 percent, besides plying separate public transport vehicles in which both the driver and conductors are women.”
Furthermore, under the joint manifesto, he said, giving and receiving of dowries will be banned and the city councils will be made responsible for its enforcement. A dispute resolution centre for domestic disputes will also be established in each union council.
Speaking about other aspects of the manifesto, Shamim said the main objective of the parties was to create a peaceful and harmonious environment in Karachi.
“All broken and dysfunctional bodies and agencies will be institutionalised and we [JI-PTI] will work towards obtaining more autonomy for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC),” he said. “Without the empowerment of KMC, the major issues of Karachi cannot be tackled effectively.”
He claimed the parties’ first priority was to address the water issue and immediately complete the K-IV water project and improve public transportation in Karachi.
