The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has convened a meeting on November 14 to review the law and order arrangements for the second phase of the local bodies polls to be held on November 19 in Sindh.
According to the ECP, the chief secretary, the IGP, the additional chief secretary, officials of the home department and the district returning officers of Sanghar, Badin, Tharparkar, Umerkot and Naushero Feroze will attend the meeting to be presided over by Chief Election Commission (Retd) Justice Sardar Mohammed Raza.
In view of the election violence in Khairpur, almost all political parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, have demanded that Rangers should be deployed at all the polling stations to maintain law and order and to ensure transparency.
Leaders of the opposition parties have already submitted a requisition to the provincial election authorities, demanding deployment of law enforcers in and outside the polling stations.
The ECP secretary has said troops will be deployed only at sensitive polling stations. However, the Sindh government has said police would perform duties inside and outside the polling stations, and Rangers and army personnel would be on standby.
