ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reached out to several world capitals represented at the United Nations to start consultations in the face of ‘debt challenges’ facing most of them.

Pakistan has been in the forefront and consistently highlighting this issue, as the world economies take a battering in the aftermath of the COVID –19.

“In consultation with the UN and other international institutions, the prime minister and foreign minister are speaking to a number of leaders to discuss the need for a coordinated and comprehensive solution to the debt issue”, announced the Foreign Office.

Pakistan has taken this step after Prime Minister Imran Khan’s call for a Global Initiative on Debt Relief was widely welcomed at the United Nations, including by the Presidents of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council.

“Pakistan will convene a group of interested countries at the UN to commence consultations on further steps that can be taken to evolve a comprehensive solution to the debt challenges of developing countries resulting from the COVID-19”, commented the Foreign Office.
