LAHORE: The panel led by Dr Jawad Sajid Khan/Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman defeated Kamran Lashari panel in the Lahore Gymkhana election by winning eight out of total 12 Committee of Management seats and Dr Jawad Sajid Khan became the new chairman of the club.

The winning chairman Dr Jawad Sajid Khan bagged 1795 votes out of total 3966 votes. There are 5500 permanent members of the club while the turnout at the club polls was massive as compared to the previous election when around 2200 votes were polled.

Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman was the second with 1782 votes, followed by Dr Ali Razzaque 1661 votes of the same group. Kamran Lashari heading the other panel secured 1645 votes and stood fourth in the result table. The other winning candidates are: Mian Pervez Bhandara 1519 votes, Sarmad Nadeem 1472 votes, Kh Imran Zubair 1400 votes, Wajid Aziz Khan 1339 votes, Samira Maroof Khan 1296 votes, Ahsan Saeed Mian 1279 votes, Agha Ali Imam 1261 votes and Shaukat Javed 1235 votes. Total 29 contestants took part in the election, out of which Dr Jawad Sajid Khan/Mian Misbah group winners are: Dr Jawad Sajid Khan, Mian Misbah, Dr Ali Razzaque, Pervaiz Bhandara, Sarmad Nadeem, Ali Imam, Wajid Aziz and Samira Maroof Khan.

Dr Ali Razzaque talking to The News on election results said they left the Kamran Lashari group when he did not honour the commitment of giving the charge of chairman to Dr Jawad Sajid Khan for the third year, besides betraying the commitment of not contesting the election. Thus, we left Kamran Lashari Group and made our own group and later made alliance with Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman.

“We contested election on four counts out of which one was forensic audit of the club’s expenditures as we are custodians of the club on behalf of the members and have to protect their rights,” Dr Ali Razzaque said, adding that this forensic audit will not limit to the outgoing committee tenure but it will also take place in future too. Further, we promised to the members to reduce the pricing of food and beverages and enhancing car parking capacity.

On the other hand, losing panel head and outgoing club chairman Kamran Lashari said all groups got united against single group besides four to five former chairmen opposing him. “We contested elections only on one card of performance while other group contested on politics of ‘bardarism’, favouritism, personal affiliations and other interests,” he added.

“The result is politics win over performance,” Lashari said, adding that despite all politics, result is not much discouraging as people still honour performance as difference of vote between the two losing candidates of his group is only 50 votes. However, Lashari lamented that the result also reflects that the educated people of the society were still stuck with the village thinking while voting. When one cast vote on the basis of ‘baradari’, or personal affiliations instead of performance it reflects one’s thinking, he mentioned. Lashari said feudal thought still prevails in the educated lot of the country and the result of Gymkhana election is reflection of it.
