In any country, the police are the first line of defence pertaining to internal security. However, our police have long lost the trust of the people. From law and order in Karachi to the Kasur incident, the police have proved ineffective in every national predicament. Inefficient policing is also partly responsible for the deplorable condition of the criminal justice system of the country.
The police department needs a major overhaul. In this regard, delinking the police force from politics should be done on priority. It is suggested that the president and provincial governors should deal with matters related to the country’s internal security because of their apolitical office. A separate committee comprising superior court judges and retired bureaucrats should be set up to supervise postings and transfers in the police department.
