Women Crisis Centre observes human rights day
Islamabad : Residents of Women Crisis Centre organised a get together on the occasion of International Human Rights Day to close the activities of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence.
The event featured sharing of the success stories by women residents to encourage each other, a small rally, hand printing by the residents to show solidarity with the world and inspirational talks by the speakers including Head of Crisis Centre Care Committee Robina Farid, President Women Councillors Network from Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf, Advocate Supreme Court Surria Maryum and Director Women Crisis Centre Saira Furqaan.
The residents of the centre talked about the help extended by the shelter. “I was a resident here in 2010 and now I am working as a receptionist in an organisation. I am supporting my family and even feeding my husband who used to keep me hungry for many days,” said Saleema.
Fragile Sania is a victim of forced marriage. “When I came to shelter, I was so afraid and didn’t tell anyone my problem as I didn’t want to trust anyone. Now I discuss everything and they are providing me all kind of help especially legal help,” she said. Sania, who suffers from weak nerves and couldn’t talk well because of shivering, is a victim of forced marriage.
Constantly crying at one corner was Shakorun Bibi with her 16 year old daughter. They are new comers in at the centre. “My husband had a second marriage and now he wanted to marry his step son to my daughter. We decided to leave home and take shelter at the centre,” said Shakorun. He daughter was in the middle of second year of college. “I just want to continue my studies,” said her daughter while talking to The News.
The speakers urged residents to stay brave and firm for their rights. They also gave them tips to stay healthy and be helpful to others. Director Crisis Centre Saira Furqaan explained the significance of International Day on Human Rights. At the end the residents and participants walk till the main road in the form of a rally.
