Burglars broke in a jewellery shop in Malir late Sunday night and took away with them not only gold and cash, but also a heavy locker in which valuables were present.
Shop owners told police that the locker weighed around 640 kilogrammes in which eight kilogrammes of gold and thousands of rupees were present. The total loss is estimated at millions of rupees as robbers also took away cash and jewellery put on the shop’s display, shop owners said.
The robbery took place on the night between Sunday and Monday at the shop in Sarafa Bazaar. The shop is situated within the limits of Saudabad police station. Police said eight robbers overpowered the market’s watchman, namely Saleem, before breaking the shutter of Ayaz Jewellers with a hydraulic jack. The robbers had weapons and also a truck in which they took away the heavy locker along with gold and cash, police said.
No CCTV cameras were installed in the market, police said, adding that they were trying to get CCTV footage of any cameras installed near the market. The watchman had been taken into custody for an interrogation, police said.
On Monday, a large number of shopkeepers staged a protest against the robbery and demanded an immediate recovery of the looted cash and gold as well as the arrest of the robbers. Law enforcers visited the market and controlled the situation.
