This refers to the article, ‘Biogas and bio-CNG’ (Nov 27) by Syed Akhtar Ali. The article had really useful information on this subject. Since, there is an acute shortage of gas during winter, one is forced to look for alternative. There is a dire need to promote biogas technology by setting up plants where bulk of manure of animals as well as human excreta can be utilized for producing biogas. To achieve this objective, the National Rural Support Program (NRSP) can be the leading agency to promote biogas technology. NGOs can also be involved in setting up plants in various rural areas of Pakistan.
At the federal level, the Ministry of Climate Change can also sponsor funds as a part of eco-friendly atmosphere all over Pakistan. As the writer said, bio-CNG in Pakistan will cost Rs70 per kg. Introduction of gasifier stoves is one of its applications. India has setup 5000,000 plants as compared to Pakistan with only 5000. The federal government can assign this task to the agriculture department, local governments and oil and gas companies to accomplish this task. The NRSP at the provincial level will provide loans on soft terms so that every consumer can get the benefit of this renewable energy.
