Power costs

April 06, 2019

This refers to the news story, ‘Discos to charge Rs81/Unit extra from power consumers’ (April 5). If this trend remains unchecked by Nepra, DISCOs will increase the cost of electricity every month in the coming months. I would like to suggest that Nepra ask all DISCOs about recoveries every month and about the theft of electricity in their respective domains.

Thar coal must be used instead of imported coal. Solar power must be promoted so that deficient electricity needs can be fulfilled. Nepra must pinpoint any irregularity in the generation and distribution systems. Each plant must be evaluated on its efficiency. Nepra must, through the Ministry of Power, ensure that maximum recoveries are made so that the outstanding amount can be recovered. Nepra, GENCOs and DISCOs must be on one page in recoveries and reducing line losses. I am certain that concerted efforts can reduce losses to a bare minimum.
