Mourning is necessary but not enough to weed out terrorism. Counterterrorism is necessary but not enough without countering extremism. Elections are necessary but not enough for democracy. Law is necessary but not enough without morality to strengthen rule of law. Precept is necessary but not enough without example to win trust of people. Media freedom is necessary but not enough without conscience to uphold endangered civil rights and liberties. Cure is necessary but not enough without prevention to sustain good health. A national security state is necessary but not enough for a national welfare state. An anti-corruption campaign is necessary but not enough without people at the top setting an example to eliminate graft. Above all the nexus between democracy and hypocrisy cannot last long and if democracy blocks meaningful change it should leave us alone before it is booted out by history. B A Malik Islamabad
