MUMBAI: Days after an MBA graduate was denied a job at an export firm here because he was a Muslim, a PR executive has accused a central Mumbai housing society and a builder of refusing to rent her a house because of her religion. Misbah Qadri, who works at a PR agency had paid a deposit to a broker for sharing an apartment in a building in Wadala.
But just before she was to move in, she got a call from the broker who said she could not shift there as the builder did not want Muslims to stay in the housing society.
Shehzad Poonawalla, an activist, has taken up her case with the National Minorities Commission (NMC), seeking a probe into the charges of discrimination on grounds of religion against the builder.
Noted criminal lawyer and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Majeed Memon told reporters on Wednesday that refusal to sell or let out a flat on the basis of religion is illegal.
“The Indian Constitution assures every citizen of equal treatment and non-discrimination on grounds of race, religion, creed or caste,” said Memon.
