Italian girl detained for marriage rescued

LAHORE: Punjab Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) successfully rescued a 19-year old girl from wrongful confinement by her parents and other members of her family in Lahore.Reportedly, the girl was brought to Pakistan from Italy in February 2018 for 10 days, under pretense of her brother’s engagement. However, it later transpired that her parents wanted to marry her off against her will, thus brought her to Pakistan. While in Italy, her father had put a stop to her studies. The Italian Embassy informed PCSW chairperson about the matter with the request to ensure safety of the girl, while the interior ministry continuously followed up and assured of full support.

A PCSW team and Garhi Shahu SHO located the girl’s address and recovered her, after which she was transported to a secure location. She is adamant to go back to Italy and continue her studies, so that she may pursue a career path of her own choice. Presently, the girl is safe.

found dead: A 20-year-old youth was found dead in the Lohari Gate police area on Friday. Locals spotted his body near Paniwala Talab and informed police. The youth, yet to be identified, was an addict who might have died of an overdose of drugs, police said. The body has been removed to morgue.

woman dies: A 26-year-old married woman died under ambiguous circumstances in the Manawan police jurisdiction on Friday. Police claimed that the deceased identified as Uzma Bibi, wife of Ishtiaq, died a natural death. However, the woman’s family raised suspicion on her sudden death and demanded action against her in-laws. Police have removed the body to morgue.

Prisoner dies: A prisoner of Kot Lakhpat Jail expired in Services Hospital on Friday, two weeks after he had some severe medical complications.

The deceased identified as Zafarullah was imprisoned in connection with a murder case. His condition went critical due to illness two weeks back. Upon which, he was removed to Services Hospital where he expired. Police have removed the body to morgue.

factory gutted: A fire broke out in a foam manufacturing factory in the Chung area on Friday. Five firefighting trucks extinguished the fire after hectic efforts. No casualty was reported.

Meanwhile, power supply to many areas was suspended after a fire erupted in Wapda grid station on Momanpura Road at Darogawala. Wapda sources said the fire broke out in the grid station due to short-circuit, as a result of which, power supply was suspended. Firefighters doused the flames.

Cop dies: A police constable died in a road accident in the Kahna area on Friday. The deceased identified as Khalid Mahmood hailed from Depalpur, Okara, and served in Punjab Police. Police said he failed to control his speeding bike which went straight into an electricity pole. As a result, he suffered fatal injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he expired.

Security: Lahore police made foolproof security arrangements for the congregations in mosques and Imambargahs on the first Friday of Ramazan. Around 6,000 police officials performed duties at 4,000 mosques and Imambargahs.

Meanwhile, Dolphin Squad arrested 20 persons on charges of wheelie and impounded 18 bikes in different police stations. The accused were arrested at Kala Khatai Road, Mughalpura and other roads.
