Lights remained off at 90 landmarks, 400 retail partners and 1,058 institutions between 8:30pm and 9:30pm in the city on Saturday evening to observe Earth Hour.
The governor and CM houses, MCB building, Mazar-e-Quaid, Habib Bank Building, Sindh High Court, Karachi airport, Arts Council, Expo Centre, Agha Khan University, Sui Southern Gas Company’s headquarters, PAF and Maritime Museums, US consulate and many other establishments remained in the dark for an hour to raise awareness about the dangerous effects of global warming on the planet.
At a symbolic ceremony held by the WWF-Pakistan at the Sindh Assembly, prominent personalities of showbiz lit candles and spoke about the climatic challenges being faced by Pakistan.
Ironically, none of the government functionaries including environment minister Dr Sikandar Ali Mandhro, who was scheduled to be the chief guest on the occasion, besides Speaker Agha Siraj Khan Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza and Director-General Sindh Environmental Protection Authority Naeem Ahmed Mughal, attended the event.
Those who participated included Ayesha Omar, Hamza Ali, Ayesha Khan, Saba Hameed, Ali Noor, Saeed Ajmal, Deepak Perwani and Nazir Sabir.
Speakers urged immediate steps to save the planet.
