Calligraphy exhibition
Islamabad: A solo exhibition titled ‘Siyaah o’ Safaid’ by Mahjabeen Atif will be held at MyArtWorld, Aga Khan Road, F-6/3, from May 14 to 31. Mahjabeen Atif is a 2009 graduate of the National College of Arts, Rawalpindi, majoring in painting, miniatures and sculpture. Working mostly with acrylics, enamel and gold leaf paint on canvas, she is also a keen sculptor of wood. After attending courses in calligraphy with Rasheed Butt and Gohar Kalam, she developed a passion for the ‘haroof’ (characters) style of calligraphy on canvas and in wood. She experiments with contrasting colours and bold compositions.
“I have a unique bond with the ‘Haroof’ style of calligraphy and I transcript it in my paintings and sculptures,” says the artist. “For this exhibition my work is essentially in monochromes and using strokes of differing scales. The alphabets define themselves boldly and I aim to make my calligraphy flow in a contemporary orbit.”
