What was her crime?
The horrific incident that took place in Gujrat needs to be strongly condemned. Asma Yaqoob, a 25-year-old girl, was burnt to death because she refused to accept a marriage proposal. She was punished because she exercised her right to freewill. It is unfortunate that powerful people in our country consider people, especially women, to be disposable assets. They can do whatever they want with them and manage to get away with heinous crimes.
It is time the authorities concerned dealt with crimes like acid attacks in a strict manner. The only way to put an end to such deplorable acts is immediate justice and punishment. The chief justice of Pakistan must also take notice of this grotesque murder and ensure that proper laws are passed to deal with such crimes. Nobody should be made to suffer such a tragic fate just because he/she decided not to succumb to the wishes of the powerful sections of society.
